I’m pleased to have the opportunity to share with you something that has been very important in my life for as long as I can remember. While there is no denying the artistic and creative aspect of facial cosmetic surgery, it is with the canvas and oils, and a few other mediums, that I’ve had the chance to express and explore some of the more exciting ideas that have come to me. These are just a few of the paintings that I’ve kept around my office and home. While I will provide a commentary for each painting, please feel free to interpret each in whatever manner occurs to you. Enjoy!

Title: Circle

This painting of a young woman and a girl was inspired by observing the way my wife and daughter interacted. There was something magical, also symbiotic, in the relationship. Truly wonderful, the boy (Charley, son #1), and I would often watch the two of them in action… completely baffled!

I think what resonated with me while painting this, apart from the beautiful figure, was the deep colors and contrast between thick and thin paint. It was also an exploration into what made a female face profile attractive – the interplay of light and perceived contour.

Another study of female form and the diversity it takes. Strong color with almost cartoonish outlining helps make a visual impression.

Less about the actual figure, but more about an atmospheric feeling in the surrounding space. This picture was part of what I called a “fossil” group of paintings all done around the same time.

Part of my fossil series. This series was inspired while traveling in Banff, Canada, near my mother’s house. You could walk down Banff Avenue, and go into these shops that sold huge sheets of stone that contained entombed, fossilized fish and shells. This painting was meant to contain the paradox of the fossil, that while trapped in stone, somehow still received light from above.

Blocks of color, randomly add a wash over the main subject.

This rather large piece was more abstract than the rest of the series. Meant to convey a sense of weight and light, gold foil is interspersed with thick oil and wax.

A rather overly-benevolent self-portrait. At the time, I was experimenting with the solid sheets of color having a three-dimensional depth to them, despite being placed against a more representational figure.
Inspired by Cherie, my wife. There are these times in every wonderful relationship. You suddenly can see the one you love, and have to put brush to canvas in an attempt to capture the essence of the experience.

Water has always fascinated me. The view as seen from the perspective of a diver, or perhaps a fish, seems especially captivating. This three-part canvas tries to express this panorama.

Essentially a line drawing with color. This was a study of the female face.
